Baking Galette des Rois
January 22, 2015
To celebrate the French Epiphanie tradition, Middle School French classes made a "galette des rois", known here as King's Cake. The pie is made of a preparation called "frangipane" (almond powder, butter, sugar, almond extract, and orange blossom extract). Before covering the pie with the top dough, a "fève" (bean or lucky charm, usually a porcelain figurine) is placed in the batter.
The tradition has the youngest person sit under the table while someone is cutting the pie. From under the table, he then calls out everybody's names so that the slices are handed out randomly. The person who has the fève is crowned King for the day.
Students had a lot of fun while learning new vocabulary and being part of a custom celebrated by all in France.
This year, Ben N., Zara P., Caden R., Sarah L., Nicole O., Caitlyn L., Ryan H., Chloe S., Matthieu C. and Colin H. were all crowned Kings and Queens! Vive le Roi!
