Visiting Author Adrian Fogelin Conducts Writers Workshop

Middle School News

Shorecrest Middle School students entered the Student Activity Center on February 9, 2016, and saw shoes of all kinds lined up along the wall. “Grab a pair of shoes. Describe what you see. Now write about who would wear those shoes...” The Media Center hosted Adrian Fogelin, an award-winning author, to lead middle school language arts classes through writing workshops all day.

Fogelin has written 9 books geared towards middle school aged children and shared insights into writing from a professional writer’s perspective. She used hands-on props like purses, shoes, and pictures to help students embody the character they were creating. Students scribbled away in their notebooks and on iPads energetically and were eager to share their ideas.

Fogelin offered instant feedback and story leads to help students build engaging character sketches and stories. She also shared about the publishing process - showing her early drafts, galley copies, and the international versions of her books in several different languages. The language arts teachers joined in the the writing workshop too, and will carry on the advice and insight from Fogelin into the work they are doing in the classroom.
