Middle School News

On Monday, May 21, the Middle School student body, faculty and many visiting friends gathered in the Janet Root Theatre for the 2018 Middle School Awards Assembly. Awards were given in a variety of categories including: Academic Honors, Arts, Film and Animation, Reading, Battle of the Books, Thespians, LEGO Robotics, World Languages, Science Fair, History Fair, Geography Bee, and Duke TIP SAT/ACT scores.

The ceremony ended with some very special Shorecrest awards.
  • The Harold Bruggeman Award given to a sixth grader for sportsmanship and dedication
  • Citizen of the Year Awards were given to: fifth grader Tommy M, sixth grader Cooper M, seventh grader Taylor R, and eighth grader Zara P.
Each year the eighth grade students take The National Spanish Exam. It measures a student’s comprehension of written and spoken Spanish. In 2018, over 150,000 students took the exam. Certificates are awarded to students based on their national scores. There are four levels of certificates: the Mención Honorífica is given to students who score between the 50th and 74th percentiles. The Premio de Bronce is given to students who score between the 75th and 84th percentiles. The Premio de Plata is given to students for scoring between the 85th and 94th percentiles. Lastly, the Premio de Oro is given to students who score in the 95th percentile or higher.

This year, in eighth grade, 42 students completed the exam and there were 25 total winners from the Middle School. There were 6 Mención Honorífica, 5 Bronce, 7 Premio de Plata and 6 Premio de Oro. In the gold category were Ethan D, Anna J, and Stella P.

The following three students earned first place in the state. Skyler B, Brooke W and Michael C. They all scored in the 99th percentile nationwide, and received a check for $100! Stella earned second place in the state of Florida and received a check for $70! Congratulations to our outstanding students.

Congratulations to all of the Middle School students for a great school year!

The Assembly concluded with a photo reflection on Jonathan Davis' time in Middle School over the years. Shorecrest will miss the Davis Family when they move away this summer. Ms. Nelson also announced that in early fall of 2018 there will be auditions for a MS Musical: Disney's The Little Mermaid Jr!
