The Hobbit, a student-made film

Middle School News

As a culminating project of the Hero’s Journey unit and the reading of "The Hobbit" in English class, sixth graders re-told the story of Bilbo Baggins' adventures in stop-motion animation format using LEGOs and other found objects.

Book discussion groups became project groups, with each group choosing a chapter to recreate and each student choosing a role to play within their group. Brainstorming, storyboard creation, set design and filming were completed in the classroom, with final editing in iMovie.

The individual chapters were put together in order to form a full movie of "The Hobbit," and the end result is... fantastic! The purpose of this project was to deepen content understanding of a challenging text, and to allow individual interpretation of the story and creativity to shine.
