Eighth Graders Rock Your World

Middle School News

Shorecrest eighth graders have partnered with non-profit organization Creative Visions, Inc. for their first trimester Community Time activities. The program, called Rock Your World, guides students to identify universal human rights and / or sustainable development goals that matter to them, and then mentors them through the process of "creative activism" -- using art and media to offer solutions to, or raise awareness of, global problems.

Meetings are led by poet and educator Jessica Burnquist, who tasked the Chargers last week with repurposing old or unwanted materials into new items. In English class they learned how to use ethos, logos, and pathos to craft persuasive messages; and used those concepts to create posters advertising the items they developed.

Over the next several weeks, a series of mentors and guest speakers will share their stories to inspire and direct eighth graders as they create their own works of creative activism. For example, on October 15 they will be joined by award-winning documentary filmmaker and humanitarian Chris Temple.

Final projects will be presented to the grade in early November before being amplified on the Rock Your World website.

Rock Your World brings together multiple content areas. Many students will use this work as a jumping off point for their EDI projects, while others may incorporate it into the ROVs they will design in Marine Science in Trimester 2.
