Shorecrest School

Contributing Chargers: Diana and Marshall Craig

Advancement

Shorecrest’s Mission is augmented by the generosity of our parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends who support the school philanthropically or by effecting change locally, globally or right here at Shorecrest. We call these community members Contributing Chargers.

Diana and Marshall Craig have been deeply involved in the community since 1977 after enrolling their two young children. Over their years at Shorecrest, Marshall served two terms on the Board of Trustees and volunteered in many capacities. Diana quickly became involved in the community by working in the Lower School library as Dottie Smay’s assistant. From there she became the Director of Admissions from 1989 - 2010. 43 years later as parents of alumni and current grandparents, Diana and Marshall Craig are still very involved in the community through volunteering their time and supporting the school philanthropically.

“Our life with Shorecrest started in 1977, when - new to St. Pete - we cast about for a school for our two young children. We found Shorecrest and slipped into the school community as comfortably as we would into an old shoe. We did not know Shorecrest would become a force in our lives that still resonates 43 years later.

Our son Hutch ’89 and daughter Peyton ‘91 were at opposite poles in terms of lifelong interests: thumbs up for science for him and thumbs up for theater for her. Shorecrest magically served them both, as Hutch took honors at county and state science competitions and Peyton took honors at state drama competitions. The Craig family saga at Shorecrest hit its stride when, at one time, both Hutch and Peyton had their children enrolled. Peyton’s family is now in Mobile, AL, but Julia ’21 and Kate ’24, both good students and outstanding volleyball players, are currently at Shorecrest. One benefit of our personal evolution to grandparenthood is that we get to enjoy Grandparents and Special Friends Day, one of the happiest days of our year.

Our Heads have blended strong administrative capacity with a strategic outlook that has paid dividends in remarkable growth; the school becoming one of the premier independent schools in the state. Particularly, we think of the tremendous contributions of Mary Booker Wall and Mike Murphy. The same may be said of the leadership within the Board of Trustees and their Chairs, who have worked hand in glove with our Heads to foster the school. We can now look forward to equally outstanding leadership in the years ahead with Nancy Spencer at the helm.

As parents of graduates and now grandparents of current students, we have been able to witness Shorecrest’s metamorphosis. Each year we write a check to support the Shorecrest Fund and are happy to do so. We count these annual checks as the best investments we have ever made for our children, their children, for future generations of Shorecrest students, and for our community. We pay it forward.”

The impact of our Contributing Chargers is felt every day. When we make a gift or volunteer our time to Shorecrest, we are really just giving back to each other.
