The 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program has named approximately 16,000 National Merit Semifinalists from the 1.4 million juniors who took the 2013 PSAT. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, including the highest scoring entrants in the state. At Shorecrest, three students have been designated National Merit Semifinalists. Congratulations to Katherina F., Paul R. and Jackson W.!
These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7600 National Merit Scholarships. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies. In February, they will be notified if they’ve advanced to the Finalist level. Three types of scholarships will be offered to Finalists in the spring of 2015. Every Finalist will compete for one of 2500 National Merit $2500 scholarships, awarded on a state-representational basis. About 1000 corporate-sponsored merit scholarship awards will be awarded. In addition, about 200 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4100 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists.
About 34,000 Commended Scholars are recognized throughout the nation for their exceptional academic promise, placing among the top 5% of more than 1.5 million students who took the 2013 PSAT. At Shorecrest, five seniors have been named Commended Scholars: Caitlin B., Abby G., Jeremy J., Niomi L. and Jared W.!
More than 1600 Black American high school seniors have been designated Semifinalists in the 51st annual National Achievement Scholarship Program, out of the more than 160,000 high school juniors who requested consideration when they took the 2013 PSAT. These scholastically talented students now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship awards worth about $2.5 million. Our senior class has two National Achievement Semifinalists: Karim O. and Jake S.!
Congratulations to the ten seniors who really shined on their PSAT, and good luck to the junior class students who will be sitting for the exam next week.
