The Upper School Interact Club was excited to learn that their mentor, Mrs. Newton (aka Mama Newt), was chosen for a prestigious honor from their sponsoring Rotary Club. The Paul Harris Fellow Recognition is a Rotarian award of distinction. This year, the Saint Pete Sunrise Rotary Club contributed $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International in Mrs. Newton's name. The award recognizes her sustained 'service above self' to the youth of our community.
Kathleen Newton, Interact Club's faculty sponsor, and Diego Duran-Medina, Director of Service Learning, accepted a medal and certificate at a ceremony held by Saint Pete Sunrise Rotary Club on Tuesday, November 10.
The meaning behind this recognition was delivered by Dr. Randy Swanson, Youth Service Director of the Saint Pete Sunrise Rotary Club.

"Last year we were able to recognize the service of your clubs, and this year we are recognizing your [Mrs. Newton's] contributions. Yes, there is a price associated with this award that our club has accommodated. Think of this as a sign of the value that we place upon knowing and working with you. Most members of our club are also Paul Harris Fellows - a sign of the value we place in this distinction. It is the giving of yourselves to help others - particularly youth - that we recognize and honor with this award. Your actions have directly contributed to making our community a better place to be.
Today you are each the first we have acknowledged in this manner as a club. We hope we can do this again for others - from time to time - who are also deserving of our recognition in the community. Again, congratulations, and very best wishes from us all."
