AP Human Geography students explore GIS at USF

Upper School News

AP Human Geography students participated in USF St. Pete's GIS Day. GIS, or Geographic Information Systems, is computer software, data, and solutions that are used by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide in government, education, and business to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data. You use it yourself, every time you're on Google Maps! This is a rapidly growing field in information technology that is being used every day to make our lives better, but very few of us know about it.

The goal of GIS Day is to help educate high school students as well as the public at large on the applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), remote sensing, and computer-aided mapping. Our students have already been introduced to some of the software in the classroom, and were able to see more applications during this special field experience.
