Shorecrest Holiday Tournament, 12/21-23

Chargers 65-43 over Academy at the Lakes
Chargers 82-61 over Northeast HS
Largo over Chargers 64-63 in the Final

A Frenzied finish on 12/23 as your Shorecrest Chargers lost a close one to Largo in our tournament Finals on 12/23 64-63. We made too many turnovers, gave up too many second shots, got down 15 at the end of 3 quarters, but still ended up with the ball with 5 seconds left and down 1 with a chance to win the game.

We competed admirably, we didn’t quit and at the end of the night our 3’s got us back in it, with 7 in the 4th quarter alone and 15 for the game. A 28 point quarter almost did it.

Aundre F sparked the 4th quarter run with 3 consecutive 3 pointers, Tyee had 2 and Mitch and Devin G had 1 each in what came down to whoever had the ball on the last possession.

It was a fun finish to watch and we definitely had the Largo coach shaking his head at our furious comeback. We will be much better for this game and tournament as we prepare for another state title run.

In the semifinals we beat Northeast 82-61. After a close game at ½, 33-29, we did what we do in the 3rd quarter blitzing them 25-9 in the 3rd with several steals and 4- 3 pointers. Tyee had his best game of the year with 21 and Kent was scoring inside/out and finished with 21 also.

In the first round we beat Academy at the Lakes 65-43. Not one of our better games, but was good to get back into action after 10-days off for finals and limited practice time.

"It's a lot of fun running this offense," Tyee was quoted saying in the "Tampa Bay Times." "Everybody can shoot on this team, so when I see an open man, I want to get him the ball. It's all about winning."

Day 1 of the tournament was also covered by Big County Preps here.
Chargers vs Seffner Christian, January 2, 46-53 Loss
Seffner is one of the top Class 3A basketball teams this year, our classification, with an early win against Tampa Prep and we knew was going to be a battle. Seffner have 4 players all over 6’ 4” and were more athletic than us.

For 3 quarters, it looked promising, as we hung to close leads. Devin F hit 2-3’s in the first quarter to enable us to lead 14-12. Devin G did the same thing in the 2nd quarter and dropped a 3 to close out the half to post us a 22-19. A defensive struggle ensued in the 2nd half as Aundre F set the tone with sensational 2nd efforts on rebounds a couple big steals. But Seffner made to 3 points plays the old fashioned way and we were not able to close the game out late.

On the night, Marcus B kept us in the game all night with 16 points scoring, 9 rebounds and 5 assit. Tyee played a key distributor role with 5 assist. Devin F finished with 12 points on 4-3 pointers.
