Tying into their quilt project, the kindergarten children headed to Jo-Ann Fabrics & Craft Store to see all the fabrics available for making quilts and quilted items, as well as to see the sections in the store that have a variety of tools, batting and sewing machines.
While they were there, each class chose fabric to make a class handprint quilt to donate to a child at the Salvation Army Homeless Shelter. Mrs. Kotsko's children selected a colorful dog and cat theme fabric. They chose a matching orange fabric to use as the inner border and will use the theme fabric as the outer border. To make the quilt soft and cozy they chose a paw print fleece fabric for the back of the quilt and a squishy batting for the middle.
Each child made a paper representation of how they will turn their handprint into a dog or cat on white fabric to make the quilt blocks for the front. In addition to the class quilt, the kindergarten children each chose their own fabric to make their own quilt. They will mimic the process of the quilt for the Salvation Army on a smaller scale to create their own, and will use their handprints to create quilt block designs to match their fabric!
