State tennis: Shorecrest's Peter L defends crown

Athletics

Standing in the shade next to the Sylvan Lake Park tennis courts on Thursday, Shorecrest senior Peter L said he felt "more relieved than excited."

Then again, he also said he felt "great."

After all, he had just clinched the Class A state individual tennis title, winning his semifinal 6-2, 6-2 and following with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the championship match against Boca Raton St. Andrew's William Townsend Font.

The sense of relief, he said, grew from being the defending state champion and having everyone at school "expecting me to win."

"If I didn't win," Pete said, "it would have been a huge disappointment."

A few minutes later, Pete trotted back onto the courts with teammate Shorecrest senior Luis S for his fourth match of the day, the doubles championship final against Berkeley Prep's Connor Cedro and Ivan von Greiff.

Once again, Pete played well, but this time he and Luis finally fell 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 in a match where almost every point was hard fought.

For Cedro, a junior, it was a great accomplishment after several tough matches the past few weeks in doubles and at No. 1 singles.

"(von Greiff) and I played very well together," Cedro said. "We always stayed positive and we always believed we could win the state title."
