Shorecrest School

Catching up with Isabella Menna '12

Alumni

Isabella Menna is a 2012 graduate of Shorecrest. While a Charger, Isabella was involved in everything from International Thespian Society to the Career Day committee. She served as Captain of the cheerleading squad, had a play she wrote produced, and also worked with a classmate to found The Universal Language Club. An optimistic and outgoing young woman, she thrived here as part of the Shorecrest community.

After graduating, Isabella attended Lake Forest College in Illinois, where she was on the Poms Squad. After becoming injured, she transferred to The University of Tampa where she began pursuing a theatre degree. When not in classes, Isabella spends much of her time at Amelie Arena—if you're a hockey fan, you may have actually unknowingly seen this young alumna. She is currently a Tampa Bay Lighting Girl!

In between playoff games, we spoke to Isabella who told us a little more about her path from SPS cheerleader to Captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning Girls.

Shorecrest Preparatory School: Tell us a little about how you ended up as a Lightning Girl.
Isabella Menna: Before auditioning to be a Tampa Bay Lightning Girl, I had moved to Illinois where I attended Lake Forest College and was on the Poms Team. After becoming injured and transferring to The University of Tampa, I knew I had room to grow. While recovering from my injury I researched and decided that I wanted to be a Tampa Bay Lightning Girl. Auditions rolled around and I went in, freshly off bed rest, and ready to push myself to my limits. Thankfully I was accepted on the elite team of 14. The next year I returned as a Veteran. My third year, I auditioned and applied to be Captain, and was selected! These last three seasons I have grown as a person and as a professional all while having the honor of being an ambassador for The Tampa Bay Lightning. I cannot express the gratitude I have for my organization and all of the remarkable people who make the arena magic happen!

SPS: This time of year must be crazy for you! Do you have a life outside of the cheering?
Isabella: As an NHL cheerleader, you eat, breathe and sleep Hockey. We have no complaints! The Playoff run is a very exciting time for us all. When I am not engaged in all of our wonderful hockey festivities I spend my time learning, growing and building new contacts in the acting and modeling world. As an aspiring actor it is crucial that I continue my studies and practice within my art.

SPS: What's the best part about being a professional cheerleader/dancer?
Isabella: Hands down the best part of being a professional cheerleader is the chance to make a difference in so many young fans' lives. To see a child’s eyes light up because we wave at them or seeing their shining smiles when they are dancing with us is a priceless experience.

SPS: What keeps you busy when you're in the off-season?
Isabella: I have been an on-set Production Assistant for the film The Infiltrator starring Bryan Cranston and Benjamin Bratt (coming to theatres in July 2016!) and was a featured extra on that film as well. I have been in a couple other professional films: Inoperable and Clowntown. I am overjoyed to have such amazing experiences so early in my career. I've also done some modeling as well for Fit2Run, TBSports apparel, Lowry Park Zoo, The Bikini Boutique and Whiskey Darling Clothing.

You're four years out from your SPS graduation. When you think back on your time as a Charger, what is your favorite Shorecrest memory?
Isabella: As I sit back and remember high school, I smile. Each and every experience has helped sculpt me into who I am. I would have to pick Spirit Week! Spirit week is a chance to tap into creative expression and teamwork. It is a relaxing and exciting experience with your classmates as everyone spreads school spirit. As a Shorecrest Cheerleader, I absolutely loved being involved in every aspect of Spirit Week. I am thankful for the years I had at Shorecrest, and how the school has grown into more each and every year!
