Maintaining Bay Grasses

Shorecrest eighth graders had their second field experience last Friday as they began their work on the bay grass plot behind Haskell Field. Students are in the maintenance phase, meaning that they need to keep the grasses healthy and as a monoculture in order to transplant them later in the year. Students learned about the importance of the grasses and worked on their identification skills of finding invaders to pull.
Our Bay Grasses In Classes Program is a community restoration program where eighth graders grow smoothcord grass on Shorecrest grounds and eventually transplant it back into the Bay. Students go out about once every 2 weeks to check water quality, to weed, check for diseases, and perform basic maintenance on the plot.
Several students also took advantage of an opportunity this week to plant some red mangroves on the edge of the channel to the north of Haskell Field. Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission donated 33 red mangroves last week, and within two days all 33 had new homes thanks to the eighth graders who were willing to get wet and muddy.
