International Day of Peace Honored

International Day of Peace is celebrated each year on September 21st to strengthen the ideals of peace within and among all nations and people. This year's theme is Sustainability. Shorecrest Lower School classes talked about six of the goals that the world is striving to achieve:

Ending Hunger
Ending Poverty
Education for all
Clean water
Protecting life on land
Protecting life under the sea.

These goals are like a "to do list" for a peaceful planet. They tie in nicely with our Core Values of Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Compassion, and Knowledge.

During our Peace Day Town Meeting, we began accepting donations for the Mouse Nibbles Food Drive. It is suggested that students bring in food each subsequent Monday. This is a wonderful opportunity to teach our students to be compassionate and caring people. The Food Drive runs through Tuesday, December 6.

Peace means many things to all of us. To the Brazilian singer, Roberto Carlos, it means friendship. Whenever we make a friend, we are doing our part to bring peace to the world. In his song “Un Millon de Amigos,” Carlos sings that he wishes he had a million friends, because if he did, he would be able to sing with an even stronger voice. Students in grades 1-4 learned this song in Spanish and shared it at the Town Meeting. Kindergartners sang “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing.” Lower School classes also shared the song “Peace is the Way,” reflecting on the words of A.J. Muste, who was respected in the movement for social justice for his ability to relate to all people and to bridge divergent political sectors.

Middle School celebrated PEACE around the world by circling up and having a moment of silence during CPR to send messages of peace around the world. Each student decorated a rock with an encouraging message or word. They placed their rocks around campus to be found by fellow Chargers, so the community can be reminded that “peace rocks.” If you find one of these rocks and like the message, please take it home or pay it forward by finding it a new home.
