The Middle School Robotics teams, The R2D2's and The Force, returned victorious from their First LEGO League Tournament with the prizes for Robot Mechanical Design and Project Presentation. More importantly, both teams earned a ticket to the Regional competition that will be held at Hillsborough Community College in Plant City on February 26.
First LEGO League introduces students aged 9-16 to the fun and excitement of science and technology. In addition to building and programming working robots for challenges, students are tasked with solving a real-world problem and presenting their project to judges.

This year's challenge revolved around the theme Into Orbit. The project portion of the competition asked students to solve a problem regarding long-term space exploration. The R2D2's focused their research on the impact of zero gravity on the lymphatic system. Their solution is to build a suit that provides astronauts with a lymphatic massage. The goal of the suit is to improve the overall health of the astronaut in space. The Force researched the impact of radiation on plants grown in space. Their solution mimics Earth's magnetic field, by adding magnets to the plant pillows that are currently used to grow red lettuce in space.
