The Alpha and Junior Kindergarten classes of The Experiential School of Tampa Bay came together on stage to perform 8 winter songs for family and friends. Their annual winter concert features new and traditional holiday songs in English, Spanish and Hebrew, each with a lesson in musicality. Scroll down for a full video of the performance.
WE ALL CELEBRATE
When ES students learn a new song, we talk about its form or structure, how it's built. This song is sectional with three distinct parts. Knowing the structure of the song helped the children retain the lyrics, melody, and rhythm when they performed.

HAPPY HANUKKAH!
The emphasis here was on singing in unison, so that voices blended together.

ESTA ES LA NAVIDAD
Spanish is integrated into our curriculum in The Experiential School, and music class is no exception. La Navidad was sung in Spanish and English. The children learned to sing a syncopated melody, that is, to sing on the offbeat, rather than the downbeat. This is a difficult skill!
JINGLE BELLS
The style of this song was swing jazz. The accompaniment was twice as fast as the vocals so students had to sing slower than the music. An emphasis was also placed on pauses in music, known as rests.

SNOW IS FALLING TODAY
A song just for fun, because every concert should have one. The students choreographed this song themselves.
I HAVE A LITTLE DREIDEL
In this song, students actively used audiation. Simply put, audiation is "to think music" and it is the foundation of music learning. When you hum or whistle a melody, that is audiation!
WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS
A holiday show may feel incomplete without this Christmas Classic. This song is 500 years old and comes from England. It comes from a time when Christmas carols were banned, and a group of people tried to keep Christmas music alive.
