Upper School students in chemistry learned the difference between physical and chemical properties in the first week of chemistry class. Here, the students designed an experiment to exploit these differences to be able to separate a mixture of salt and sand. By employing commonly used chemistry techniques of filtration and distillation, students were able to determine the original composition of the salt and sand mixture, ending the experiment with a pile of sand and purified salt rather than the initial combined mixture of salt and sand.
