Our Alumni Spotlights series shares the stories of Shorecrest graduates in all phases of their careers – from emerging leaders to established experts. Our latest article spotlights the new business of Samantha Lucas Plummer '09 and her husband, Austin.
How did you and your husband meet?
My husband Austin and I met during high school. I was a junior at Shorecrest and he was a junior at St. Pete Catholic and the rest is history! We both went to the University of Central Florida for undergrad and University of Florida for veterinary and law school.
Please tell me how you and your husband came to open the business?
We are both extremely passionate about animals, and it was always Austin's dream to own his own business. After a few years practicing as an associate veterinarian locally, we decided it was time to take the next step and open our own business. Getting to opening day was difficult - COVID-19 happened just as we submitted for our construction permits on our building we just bought - but nothing would stop our dream from becoming a reality. We officially opened our doors for business on September 8, 2020!
Why was it important for you and your husband to open something of your own?
We have always wanted to own our own business. We tried to buy a clinic before deciding to open one from scratch, but large corporations are taking over veterinary medicine and pushing out independent practitioners. Austin feels strongly that despite a widespread "corporate takeover" of the veterinary profession there will always be many people who value the personal service and connection that is only possible in a family-owned environment.
What role do you play in the business?
I handle all the marketing, social media, and contracts for Plummer Pet Hospital as I am also a lawyer and have a full time job as in-house counsel at a healthcare company.
Where is the pet hospital located and what services does it provide?
Plummer Pet Hospital is located at 5800 38th Avenue North, St. Petersburg, FL 33710. Our phone number is 727-317-2706 and website is www.plummerpethospital.com. We are a full service, state of the art, veterinary clinic. We offer everything from ultrasounds, surgery, dentals, x-rays, wellness visits, vaccines, and more.
