Chargers Participate in Georgetown MUN Conference 2021

For three days last weekend, Shorecrest delegates were on campus participating virtually in NAIMUN LVIII (Model UN). Committees this year ranged from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and ECOFIN, to historical committees such as the 1948 Politburo of the Soviet Union, 1960 Coca-Cola Board of Directors and the 1973 U.S. Senate. Each committee had a different online format. In addition, breakout rooms were used for lobbying and resolution merging. Special recognition goes to Shorecrest's veteran delegates: Rod Casteel '21, Shania Dandy-Tull '21 and Brenna Dukes '21. Well done, seniors!
Shorecrest delegates had the following to say about NAIMUN:
Rod Casteel ’21 noted, “This experience was definitely better than I expected. With the entire committee on Zoom, I fully believe that the chairs and my fellow delegates did an amazing job considering this is very different than any other MUN conference. I had lots of fun!”
Cían McCarthy ‘22 said, “Having to develop my understanding of the lead up to the Korean War for NAIMUN this year to be a part of Kim Il-sung’s cabinet immersed me in that historical position and brought the context of the situation to life. Model UN is a great experience for any student, regardless of their interest in politics, because understanding how governments work and how conflicts are resolved diplomatically is a crucial part of understanding our world.”
Athena Smith ‘22 reflected, “Attending NAIMUN virtually this year put an emphasis on communication and leadership while still being a fun and engaging experience. I was a delegate in Porfirio Diaz's cabinet during the Mexican Revolution, which gave me an opportunity to learn more about an interesting historical topic while working creatively with others.”
Dylan Winer ’23 recounted, “During my time as Executive Chief Engineer of Samsung in the Samsung Board of Directors 2016, I learned how to both convey and listen to differing arguments about what the company should do. I also helped to pitch Space Samsung, which put me into the Shark Tank, and although our idea for a new subsidiary got vetoed by the board, I enjoyed the experience. The chair, crisis manager, and crisis analysts all inserted their humor and friendliness, which I appreciated because it amused me throughout the entire committee.”
