Faculty Spotlight on Coach Cameron

Upper School News

Like many of our beloved faculty members, Coach Cameron’s impact and ability to engage, inspire and lead is a testament to his care for his students and dedication to his profession. Richie Cameron joined the Shorecrest faculty in 2011, and has had the unique opportunity to work in the Lower School, Middle School and Upper School. In fact, during his time at Shorecrest he followed the Class of 2020 as they moved from division to division as their physical education teacher. For the last 5 years, Coach Cameron has been the Health and Fitness teacher in the Upper School, while also serving as Coach for our Track & Field team and the Strength and Performance Coach for all of our Athletic teams. During his tenure he has also coached golf, football and soccer.

Coach Cameron has always had a passion for health and wellness. He began as a biology student in college with an interest in pursuing a career in the healthcare industry. What he realized during those courses was the importance of prevention and promotion of healthy lifestyle habits. This is what led him to physical education, health and fitness.

“My thoughts were simple: Giving students/individuals the tools to help them live healthier lives would hopefully keep them away from having to go to hospitals and emergency rooms for major health issues,” explains Coach Cameron.

With 10 years of fond memories in the classroom and on the field of play, it can sometimes be difficult to pinpoint just one that stands out, so Coach Cameron shares that the memories that stick with him are when he has the opportunity to witness students and athletes reach far beyond what they thought they could have achieved; when Chargers accomplished more than they believed possible.

Coach Cameron has always been vocal about the actions students can take to improve their health and achieve their goals. He adds, “I reiterate to my students to focus on the how, not the if. When life gets challenging, focus on how you can get through it, not on if you will.”

Richie Cameron’s wife, Danielle, also teaches at Shorecrest. The Camerons have three Chargers: Alaya '31, Ellis '33 and Khali '28.
