Shorecrest's Upper School Performing Arts enchanted audiences at the 2021 Fall Music Showcase on Saturday, November 13 in the Weiss Family Pavilion. The intimate gathering under twinkling cafe lights featured student solos and small ensemble selections from bands, musical theatre classes, Treblecrest a capella and more. Students presented a little rock ‘n’ roll, original songwriting, some tunes from Broadway and closed out the show with familiar favorites. In the early stages of planning the Showcase, Shorecrest’s Creative Director and alunni parent, Jon Hoefer, presented the idea of integrating student visual artwork alongside the performing arts. With the help of Charla Gaglio, Chair of Visual Arts, and Allison Roberts, US Digital Arts and Photography Teacher, students were presented with a real world assignment. Jon hosted a professional meeting to explain the project, the way a client would meet with an artist in a business setting. Students were given parameters and design specifications, “and also the freedom to create a piece that was appropriate for the event in their own unique style and chosen medium,” Jon explained.
Five students were given one week to send in sketches and two more weeks to complete a final piece to be scanned or photographed. “I was really pleased with the final results by the students, each having a warm, fall theme — yet all being so different. Not only did we print five different program covers for the Fall Music Showcase (featuring the five different art pieces), we loved the pieces so much that we wanted their artwork to play a visual role in the event.”
With the help of Shorecrest Theatre Manager Brad Miller and his team, each art piece was enlarged, framed, and stunningly illuminated in locations around the Weiss Family pavilion on the night of the Showcase.
