How Joseph Campbell Turned All of my Favorite Stories into the Same, Sadly Predictable Tale
Instructor: Jake Seymour, US English Chair and Teacher
Meets 3/21, 4/4 and 4/11 only - will NOT meet on 3/28
Cost: $50 per student
"It's all the same story!" From the first story committed to writing, to classic films, to modern blockbusters, the favorite tales of humanity all have, according to author and professor emeritus in comparative mythology and comparative religion, Joseph Campbell, the same, clearly defined stages and easily recognized characters. Campbell called it The Monomyth; educators call it "The Hero's Journey," and in his seminal work, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Campbell identifies these easily recognized "tropes" of modern storytelling in cultures across time and geography, proving once again, that we humans have so much more in common than we might think. Don't worry if you haven't read Campbell, or Freud, or Jung. If you were raised on Tolkein, The Wizard of Oz, or Star Wars, or inadvertently memorized Finding Nemo, The Nightmare Before Christmas or Turbo while raising your own kids, you'll have all the prior knowledge necessary to explore the power of The Monomyth.
