First Graders Create Ocean Videos

Lower School News Featured

First graders at Shorecrest Preparatory School spent months learning about the ocean and its inhabitants. In addition to performing much of what they learned for families and peers, students also selected an ocean creature to study independently. Students in Ms. Simons' class used their research to create projects -- and some students chose to use software such as ScratchJr, iMovie, Seesaw, and Stop Motion Studio. Thanks to Shorecrest's 1:1 iPad program, every student had access to an iPad device, which became their tool and canvas for creativity.

In the following video, Jules G. shows an example of a her video project she created using ScratchJr. Jules painted a water bottle to look like a shark, took a photo of the bottle, imported it into ScratchJr, and removed the background of the photo so the ocean background could be seen behind the shark. Then she coded the shark’s movements around the screen, programming it to pause periodically and share facts about sharks with viewers.

The students' final marine life videos are examples of integrating technology with traditional learning, making education an exciting and personal journey for each student. Families were invited to a project share so students could showcase and present their hard work.
