First Graders Practice Play-Doh Surgery
Thank you to Shorecrest parent and general and cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Mindi Giglio, for visiting Mrs. Casano's first grade as a guest expert for their Human Body unit. She demonstrated for students in an interactive way how recent areas of study might relate to a surgeon's job. Dr. Giglio made a Play-Doh model of a human abdomen. Student's acted as surgeons, carefully working together with plastic knives in the soft surface, to remove an angry gallbladder, an angry appendix, and a swallowed coin.
"It was fantastic!" Mrs. Casano shared. "She taught our class about surgery, as it's her expertise. She took the areas of study my classroom is focused on and related that to surgery. For example my students have studied the skin, so we talked about cutting through the layers of the skin. We studied the digestive system recently, and Dr. Erica Schallert had showed us an x-ray of a swallowed coin, so she had a swallowed coin that needed to be removed from the Play-Doh."
