On February 20, 2025, the Shorecrest community came together for the annual SCA Thank You Event to celebrate the incredible volunteers help Shorecrest thrive. The event served to recognize the outstanding contributions of parents, staff and community members who generously give their time and energy to Shorecrest.

Volunteers play a vital role in Shorecrest’s success—whether assisting in classrooms, organizing events like the Book Fair and Fall Festival, supporting the library, or volunteering through Helping Hands. These efforts not only benefit individual children but also enrich the experience for all students.

Head of School Nancy Spencer gave special recognition to SCA President Kyle Toma for her leadership and service this year, and to SCA Vice Presidents Sasha Muzzarelli and Lindsey Carroll for their dedication. SCA’s efforts this fall, including post-hurricane support to the community, were highlighted and deeply appreciated. The event also honored the ongoing support of the Alumni Board, the Board of Trustees, and the Janet Root Volunteer Service Award committee, as well as the efforts of schoolwide Volunteer Coordinators Lauren Carlan and Kristi Aussner.

This year’s prestigious Janet Root Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Bernice Murphy, a tireless volunteer since joining Shorecrest in 2014. Bernice has co-chaired the Book Fair, contributed to the Fall Festival, supported the Performing Arts, and volunteered with initiatives like Helping Hands, the SCA Greenery sale, and the Holiday Gift Drive year after year. Her dedication to the Haskell Library and the Performing Arts department reflects her commitment to all students across campus. The School is proud to honor Bernice, parent of Mr. Spirit 2024, Tommy Murphy ‘25.

In addition to recognizing the Janet Root Award winner, SCA presented an honorary award to the late April Cabral, a remarkable woman whose strength, grace, and spirit inspired all who knew her. April was a dedicated volunteer who helped to bring Girl Scouting back to Shorecrest, assisted with the Oldie Goldie Book Sale, and supported numerous school activities. Despite facing cancer with resilience, April's commitment to others never wavered. Her legacy lives on through her contributions to the Shorecrest community. April's daughter, Annie '32, accepted the award on behalf of the family, a fitting tribute to a woman who made a profound impact.

Thank you Shorecrest community for your continued contributions to our school community!
