Sixth Grade Launches RRI School Store Project
In science and technology classes, Shorecrest sixth graders have been learning how to use spreadsheets to manage and manipulate data. "Through in-class exercises, they have learned how to format their data; how to calculate the mean, median, mode, and range using a formula; and how to create graphs to present their findings," shared Middle School Curriculum Dean and Technology Coordinator Chris Scoby. Armed with their new skills, the sixth graders visited the new Shorecrest School Store to meet Store Manager Cayce Cirino and RRI Director Earl Walton to discuss ways they can put those skills into practice for real-world applications.
The visit to the store is part of a long-term sixth grade project with the newly launched Ross Roeder Institute for Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurship and Economics (RRI). "The students were so excited to talk with Cayce, the store manager, and review the actual sales data. They asked great questions and had so many immediate insights and ideas about how to tell a story using data," shared Walton.
Right away the Chargers were eager to get to work. They brainstormed new sales strategies on the spot, including promoting new products at parent nights, in Ebytes, on billboards, and at athletic events. They mentioned polling Upper School students about their favorite snacks and tracking the data to help inform inventory additions. They even made suggestions about product placement to move high-value items to higher-trafficked areas of the store. The sixth graders' ideas demonstrate their proactive and thoughtful approach to enhancing the School Store's success.
Over the next four weeks students will use actual School Store sales data to develop recommendations to increase sales, including ideating new products and advertising campaigns, and pitching them to a committee of experts. Ideas with the most potential may be incorporated into the Shorecrest School Store!
Update 11/8/2023: The students created surveys to collect data that will allow them to develop recommendations to increase sales, including ideating new products. The surveys were shared with MS parents/guardians. Following their analysis of the data collected from the surveys, sixth graders will pitch their ideas to a committee of experts.
