Exploring Marine Science at Gandy Beach

On December 11, the eighth graders embarked on an exciting field trip to Gandy Beach as part of their Marine Science class. The weather was beautiful, with temperatures ranging from the low to mid-50s and abundant sunshine. During their visit the students actively engaged in collecting vital water quality data, including salinity, pH levels, and water temperature. An interesting observation was made when they discovered that the water temperature was actually warmer than the air, adding an extra layer of fascination to the experience.

Microplastics, defined as plastic particles measuring 5mm or smaller, were distressingly easy to find during the expedition. Plastic items littered on the beach become brittle when exposed to salt water and sunlight, causing them to break into small pieces.

The students also encountered the beauty of marine life. Seagrass, playful dolphins, long-clawed hermit crabs, mangrove crabs, an egg sack for polycheate worms, and even a small horseshoe crab approximately the size of a silver dollar were among the fascinating sights.

Overall it was a perfect day for a field experience, providing the Chargers with both a hands-on learning opportunity and a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance of our marine ecosystems.
