Outdoor Club at Regional Climbing Championship

Upper School News

As the year comes to a close, the Shorecrest Outdoor Club has made some great strides. Students have become more and more engaged in its activities, and there have been increasingly more people who are showing their true dedication and passion for the world of the outdoors. Undeniably the most notable of these outstanding students are the ones who show an unparalleled commitment to rock climbing.

After attending numerous local rock climbing competitions to qualify, sophomore Will M. and freshman Sophie E. attended the Sport and Speed Regional Championship in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 14. Hosted at Stone Summit, the largest climbing gym in North America, they partook in the opportunity to climb with climbers of all skill levels. The routes all measured more than 90 feet tall, and, upon finishing, the two were able to view many other climbers and their routes.

The competition was a valuable educational experience for the young climbers, as they got to learn from professionals how to hone and advance their skill. When asked if he would attend next year, Will responded with an excited “definitely,” as he said the trip was an experience worth reliving.

Next year, Will, Sophie, and the rest of the Outdoor Club will be visiting Vertical Ventures (our local climbing gym) every Thursday via the free shuttle provided by the club. Anyone who wants to join us is more than welcome! See Mr. Steele, Alyssa F., Riley L. or Lucy W.
