GSI Students attend Lecture on North Korea

Four sophomores who participate in Shorecrest’s Global Scholars Initiative attended a lecture by Scott A. Snyder on Thursday, November 1. The Tampa Bay Committee on Foreign Relations remarks were titled, “From ‘Fire and Fury’ to the Singapore Summit: Prospects for Peacefully Managing the North Korean Nuclear Threat.”
Mr. Snyder is a senior fellow for Korea studies and director of the program on U.S.-Korea policy at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). He received his MA from the regional studies East Asia program at Harvard University.
After going through some recent events and end game theories regarding U.S./DPRK diplomacy, Mr. Snyder addressed the following:
- China’s position on a nuclear North Korea, re-unification, and the status quo.
- The pros and cons of President Trump’s war of words with Chairman Kim Jung-un.
- What the current progressive government in South Korea means to 3 and 4 party talks.
- DPRK’s nuclear development and economic aid from states such as Iran, China, etc.
Nadya DeFreitas ‘21 had the following to say about Mr. Snyder’s presentation:
“I found it interesting to hear about Mr. Snyder's experiences considering the fact that he has been to both sides of the Korean peninsula and that he understands the conflict from multiple perspectives.”
Sidney Jones ’21 said, “I found the whole thing very interesting and I enjoyed hearing about Korea from an unbiased mindset.”
Carly Baker ’21 remarked, “One reason I joined GSI was to meet international people. The dinner I attended allowed me to talk with a Japanese marine captain and to see the way he views current events. He talked to me about his job and answered all of my questions. I loved hearing Mr. Scott A. Snyder talk about Korea, since he has been studying and researching North Korea, he described it in great depth, and with an unbiased opinion.”
