SCA Presentation: Apps Kids Love and What Parents Should Know about Them [Video]

Upper School News

On Wednesday, November 14, the Shorecrest Community Association welcomed Dr. Anna Baralt, Shorecrest Director of Educational Technology, to talk to parents/guardians about popular apps that students are using and what parents should know about them. The apps spanned from Snapchat to Fortnite, Houseparty to KIK, vaults and video apps and more. The presentation was geared toward families of Middle and Upper School students, but Dr. Baralt noted that any child who has a smartphone, iPad or laptop may have access to such apps.

She discussed many of the positive benefits of some of the apps, like helping children stay in touch with friends and family, or facilitating remote collaboration with classmates on homework and group projects. She also offered insight on some of the ways that these apps can be use to distract or even endanger students and some of the ways children have found to work around network and parental control settings. View a video of her presentation here.

Later this school year Dr. Baralt will offer additional tech sessions for families about managing new iOS12 screen time and privacy settings and ways to help children use their devices for education and reduce distraction.

Also at the SCA meeting was Shorecrest Athletic Director Anthony McCall who talked about the wonderful fall season for Chargers Athletics and the growing Intramural Programs for students in Lower and Middle Schools. He thanked families for their support of the program and our athletes and invited everyone to continue cheering on our Chargers!
