Shorecrest Broadcasting Club Reports on Fall Athletic Competitions

Upper School News

Something has changed. Perhaps it's the fact that school has finally returned; perhaps it's the sense of normality after a summer void of it, or could it be the gentle breeze that has cooled our warm Florida air over these past two weeks. While all of the above rings true there still remains a longing for something more, an unsettled hunger, a thirst that has only recently been quenched.

Yes, sports are back! Golf, football, volleyball, cross county, cheerleading, as well as swim and dive have officially started their seasons. Of course, necessary safety precautions have been put in place across all fields of athletics for clear reasons. However, the current state of the world has not diminished the Shorecrest Community’s enthusiasm and support for their Chargers. This has led some enterprising Upper School students to re-establish the Shorecrest Broadcasting Club, so all Chargers fans can watch games from the comfort of their homes (or devices, as the case may be.) Many athletes from within the Upper School, along with Coach McCall, have pitched in on this project tremendously, and so far have delivered.  The members of the club have proven that the Shorecrest community can overcome obstacles to create a fun, safe, and overall better environment.

The first livestream hosted by the club is the football game against Lakeside Christian on Friday, September 25 at 7pm. (Learn more about livestreamed home sports here.)

Some Chargers have delivered outstanding performances this past week. Over in the golf corner, former state championship contender Bill Bircher ‘22 shot three under par, almost topping his career best, and leading his team to defeat Indian Rocks Christian, 139-164. “I think we played really well. I feel like the course set up in a way which helped us succeed as a team,” he stated on Tuesday to the Network.

Moving on to Swim & Dive, the Chargers truly shined last Wednesday against CCC, beating them 297-266. Some highlights included the Boys 7-second victory in the 200 yard relay (1:47.45), State Champion Sarah Lankford's ‘22 victory in both the girls 200 yard (1:56.16) and 500 yard (5:08.33) Freestyle, earning Shorecrest 16 points on her own. Furthermore, Evan Hoefer ‘21 came in first in both the boys 100 yard Freestyle (0:55.56) and Backstroke (00:59.08).

Of course, there is so much more to talk about in regards to athletics. The Volleyball teams dominance, the cross country teams victory this week, and football’s first game with only 8 men on the field. In weeks to come we hope to bring news of all Chargers sports teams to the Shorecrest community, and in doing so bring the school together during these tough times. It is a privilege to be part of this club and network. Have a good week!
