Holly M wins Animation Contest

Upper School News

Senior Holly M first heard about the Youtube Channel Draw With Jazza through Richard Perrine and Aaron Sober, her Shorecrest Upper School animation teachers. While looking through the animator's channel, she saw that he was hosting an animation contest and immediately wanted to be a part of it.

"To be able to get feedback from a highly acclaimed animator with professional experience is invaluable." Holly explained. "The theme of the challenge was 'The Ministry of Silly Walks', and the idea of a walking mustache seemed too hilarious not to animate."

After calculating the primary and secondary motion of the animation (along with a myriad of other mechanics), Holly set to work. After what felt like two days of non-stop animating, she submitted an entry.

"Holly's piece of a cowboy's walk cycle on his mustache has great character design and a really nice solidity." critiqued Josiah Brooks, the artist behind Jazza. He placed her art in a pool of 25 pieces up for a Community Prize through an online vote. You can watch the character's silly walk in box #14 here.

"When I saw that I had been nominated as a finalist for the Community Prize, I immediately sent the news to Mr. Perrine, who quickly forwarded it to everyone in the Shorecrest Upper School." Students and teachers voted, and shared the entry on their own social media accounts to help increase votes. "I couldn't have won without the overwhelming support of the Shorecrest community, and I'd like to thank everyone who voted for me and shared my entry; I'm truly grateful for all of the support I've received." Holly shared.

For her winning mustachioed cowboy animation, Holly will receive a Wacom digital drawing tablet.

"Holly has loved animé and cartooning all through her high school years, so I'm especially happy that this contest has recognized her interest-turned-into-ability," said Dean of Faculty Richard Beaton.
