Eighth Grade Adopts a Drifting Buoy from NOAA

Thanks to the help of Mike Alyea from Blue Ocean Sails, the eighth graders have been given the opportunity to adopt a drifting buoy from NOAA. The grade S​​​​kyped with Mr. Alyea, and during that session he surprised them by giving them the opportunity to adopt the buoy. All of the students seemed really excited with the idea!

Mr Alyea will be launching the buoy anytime within the window given to him from NOAA, from October 10-23, 2016. He will be sailing out on his sailboat named Sea Breeze, 85 miles off the coast of St Augustine, Florida, where he will launch the buoy into the Gulf Stream. The buoy will be active for more than 400 days and will be transmitting sea surface temperature, latitude and longitude to a satellite every hour once launched. 

Shorecrest students will be able to track the buoy once released by logging into the NOAA website. They are currently working on coming up with a name and signing some Shorecrest stickers that Mr Alyea will attach to the buoy before he launches it. More information to come when the buoy is released!
