Cole Smith Awarded Max Goldstein Prize at NYU

Alumni

Congratulations to alumn Cole Smith '15, now a junior at New York University (NYU) in their 5-year Accelerated BA/MS Computer Science program within NYU Courant. Cole was recently awarded NYU's Max Goldstein Prize.

The Max Goldstein Prize is awarded annually for undergraduate creativity in computing. Cole created a check-in App for NYU that is used in 20 departments (thus far) and has received over 60,000 hits.

Max Goldstein was the director of the DOE computer center at NYU, the co-founder of the Department of Computer Science, and the first director of the Academic Computing Facility. An important figure in developing computing at the Los Alamos National Laboratory after World War II, Max felt that computing had profound implications for many disciplines and at many levels.

While a student in Shorecrest's Upper School, Cole interned for Joe Hamilton, CEO and Managing Partner of Big Sea. When reflecting back on Cole's performance Joe said, "Cole stood out to me because he could see problems from multiple perspectives at the same time. This gave him the confidence to go after a robust solution, and accordingly it's no surprise that he's now winning awards for solving complex problems."

This summer Cole will be interning with Ernst & Young as a consultant.
