Just like our extraordinary arts and music programs here at Shorecrest, our athletic programs are something to celebrate. Great athletic programs are a foundation of great school communities. Participation in school sports not only provides students with a chance to learn lessons and traits that will help them later in life, but it also gives them an opportunity to become leaders and make an impact in their communities. Our student athletes demonstrate commitment, teamwork, leadership, time management, endurance and more.
Each year, the Shorecrest Athletics Program recognizes the male and female student-athlete of the year with the The Coach Philip Hayford Outstanding Male Athlete Award and The Fran Risser Outstanding Female Athlete Award. We will be presenting these awards as part of the Charger Hall of Fame event on Thursday, April 25, which starts with a reception at 5:30pm in the Janet Root Theatre Lobby, followed by the program at 6pm.
The Charger Athletic Hall of Fame was established by the Shorecrest Alumni Association & Athletic Department in 2009 to recognize athletes, coaches, teams, leaders and volunteers whose contributions and athletic achievements have been of the highest caliber and have improved Shorecrest’s reputation in sports. When athletes, parents and alumni see the past and present come together they see themselves participating in something larger than themselves. They can commit to and take pride in their school's community, and cement that connection with fun.
To continue our celebration of athletics, this year’s State of St. Pete on Thursday, May 2 sponsored by the Alumni Association, is athletics minded. Matt Silverman, the President of the Tampa Bay Rays, Co-Chairman of the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Shorecrest Parent, will be sharing thoughts on why he feels St. Petersburg is unique in the world of sports, insights into the Rays baseball season, the latest on the acquisition of the Tampa Bay Rowdies and more. Mascots for both teams will be part of the evening which starts at 6pm with a reception followed by the community conversation at 6:30pm. More information about this free community event can be found at www.shorecrest.org/stpete
We hope you will join us at both of these events and celebrate all that sports has to offer!
