Three students in Shorecrest's Global Scholars Initiative (GSI) attended the first of the TBCFR's 2014-15 lecture series. The featured speaker was Dr. Gal Luft, co-director of the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security and senior advisor to the United States Energy Security Council, a cabinet-level extra-governmental advisory committee.
Dr. Luft drew heavily on economic analysis to argue that the problem of American oil cannot be resolved by either by additional drilling or conservation efforts. Rather, he argued for the development of alternate fuels such as methanol and ethanol to provide petroleum consumers with an alternative, competitively-priced fuel. This would break oil's current virtual monopoly over transportation. Dr. Luft was impassioned in his delivery, and his remarks certainly provided food for thought on this sometimes overlooked aspect of national security.
