Freshman Kyle M Runner-Up in Writing Contest

Middle School News

Congrats to freshman Kyle M, Runner-Up for his story “Wave of Shining Points: How the South Won Gettysburg” in the 2014 Alternate Times student writing contest. Alternate history is a genre of fiction in which the author speculates on how history might differ in an alternate version of Earth. Kyle wrote from the story prompt: What if the Confederate troops had taken Little Round Top and Robert E. Lee had won the Battle of Gettysburg? It was particularly intriguing to him since he visited Gettysburg this summer during a road trip back from NYC.

If this genre sounds interesting to you, there is a suggested reading list for young adults on the contest website, here.

The contest was open to Tampa Bay high school students, and sponsored by the Tampa Bay Times Newspapers in Education and USF Humanities Institute. Award Presentations and a reading will be at the Tampa Bay Times Festival of Reading on Saturday, Oct 25.
