Fifth Grade Sets Up Mangrove Project

Middle School News

The fifth grade students recently made two different trips to the Weedon Island Preserve to learn more about the local native plants and wildlife found in their community. This is a part of their year-long science project investigating the question “How Do Florida Red Mangroves Grow Best?”

On their second trip, students collected five propagules (red mangrove seeds) that were planted in their science classroom as part of their controlled experiment. Closer to the end of the school year, their growing propagules will be returned to their natural environment to help replenish a local area needing coastal protection.

Now the Mangroves are in their jars and fifth graders are ready to do some experiential testing of "How Florida Red Mangroves Grow Best!"
