Spotlight on Jamie Grant ‘04

We know our Chargers accomplish great things once they leave our classrooms and embark on some fascinating careers. We recently spoke with Shorecrest alumna Jamie Grant ‘04 about her path into the business of sports.
What is your occupation?
I am currently a Senior Manager at the National Football League Players Association, working on our Player Services team. In my role here, I am responsible for player-related marketing activations for sponsors and licensees. We basically help these companies facilitate partnerships with NFL athletes for their marketing needs (e.g. endorsements, commercials, appearances, tradings cards, events at things like Super Bowl, Combine, etc.).
How did you come to work in the field that you do now?
In my senior year at University of Central Florida, I took a professional selling course as part of my marketing minor. Through this class, I was connected with Dr. Bill Sutton who invited me to attend the NBA Job Fair where I was able to meet with sales executives from all 30 NBA teams. I was offered a job with the Atlanta Hawks in their Group Sales department and moved there right after graduation. I maintained that relationship with Dr. Sutton, and I was offered an opportunity to join his newly started MBA Program in Sports Management at University of South Florida in 2012. Dr. Sutton remains one of my key mentors.
The MBA with a concentration in Sport Business coursework is focused on the business of sport—human capital, organization resources and development, innovation and technology in sport, culture and business relationships, sport and law and emerging issues in global sport.
What is your favorite thing about your job?
My favorite thing about my job is seeing projects I work on come to life, especially on a national broadcast! As a part of my role, I have been able to develop professional relationships with many athletes and frequently get an opportunity to see terrific sporting events.
How did Shorecrest prepare you for life outside of the classroom?
In my time at Shorecrest, I learned how to prioritize multiple responsibilities. A skill that certainly comes in handy in the workplace.
What advice do you have for graduating Shorecrest classes?
My advice to graduating Shorecrest classes is don't be afraid to go with your gut. Life isn't a straight line and that's okay! And, listen to Señora Grant :)
