Model Doghouse Project

Shorecrest seventh graders enjoyed using their math skills for a creative project this week.

The Chargers were greeted with a note which began, “Surprise! You got a new puppy!” Although the puppies were just imaginary, students were excited to build dog houses (to scale) for their new furry friends. To plan their doghouses, they learned the size of their dog, and the measurements needed relative to the size of the dog to create a comfortable space for it.

Some of the instructions read, “The length of the doghouse should be 1¾ times longer than the length of the dog. The width of the doghouse should be twice as wide as the dog’s shoulder width. The door height of the door leading into the doghouse needs to be 1 1⁄6 times the puppy’s height.”

Students made the necessary calculations and then converted the dimensions from feet to centimeters. With poster board and other materials, they got busy cutting, taping, stapling coloring and more to complete original doghouse creations! 

Pro tip from Mrs. Montoya: Measure twice, cut once. Make sure you are precise with your measurements and double check before you cut your material.
