Chargers Nominated for Broadway Star of the Future Awards
In November 2023, Shorecrest Performing Arts presented the Upper School play "The Importance of Being Earnest." The production was reviewed as part of the Broadway Star of the Future program presented by the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts. Under direction of the US Theatre and Thespian director Michael McCarthy, the following Chargers have been nominated for Broadway Star of the Future Awards:
- Outstanding Performer in a Lead Role in a Play: Ethan Bekurs '24 as Algernon Moncrieff, Lauren Brumbelow '24 as Gwendolen Fairfax
- Outstanding Direction of a Play: Michael McCarthy
- Outstanding Technical Achievement: Scenic Design (Drew McKinney)
Shorecrest will be notified in May which awards the production has received and who is invited to perform at the Broadway Star of the Future Awards Showcase on Sunday, May 19.
Broadway Star of the Future Awards are Regional awards affiliated with the National High School Musical Theater Awards (NHSMTA) or the Jimmy™ Awards. At the showcase in Tampa, two musical theatre performers will be invited to attend the Jimmy Awards / National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York City, expenses paid. Participants experience a week of private coaching, master classes, and rehearsals with theatre professionals and they receive opportunities for merit scholarships, professional advancement, and other prizes. Jimmy™ Awards are then awarded to two grand prize winners.
