As part of a Global Studies Initiative in Lower and Middle Schools this year, Shorecrest will have its first complete exchange with Colegios Ramon y Cajal in Madrid, Spain. The Spanish students recently visited Shorecrest, and in February 2020, the Chargers who hosted a student will visit Colegios Ramon y Cajal for two weeks.
The Spanish delegation arrived on Saturday, October 28. They were received at Charger Commons by Shorecrest host families. Upon their arrival all the children were happy playing ga-ga ball together! By 10pm there seemed to be no language or cultural barriers, and they were all happily playing together.

The first full day of the visit they were presented in the Middle and Lower School Town Meetings. The students from Madrid talked about churros and paella de pollo, which were the dishes the Chargers were going to be served for lunch that day in Charger Commons, honoring Hispanic Heritage month. They also sang a Spanish song and taught some dances in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month in Middle School.
The visitors gave a presentation about Spain in eighth grade Spanish class and met with Mr. Murphy to talk about their experience at Shorecrest. There was also time for tourism and fun! They visited the Dalí Museum, Busch Gardens, and the Florida Aquarium.

The Spanish delegation had a wonderful visit to Shorecrest, and loved being able to share their culture and learn about American culture here at Shorecrest. However, none of this would have happened without the willingness, time, effort, and love of our wonderful Shorecrest families who hosted them! We also owe gratitude to the wonderful Spanish team in Middle School, open to many global experiences for their students. Thanks to all! ¡GRACIAS a todos!
Hosting a student delegation from Spain has been a broadening experience for the Chargers, their families, the teachers, and the Spanish exchange students. The adventure will continue when eighth graders from Shorecrest who hosted Spanish students will go to Colegios Ramón y Cajal as exchange students and will be hosted by the families of the Spanish students who visited Shorecrest. Student exchanges are definitely an enriching experience. This type of experience helps a child to gain confidence, practice and learn a new language, practice leadership skills, and is a take-off to instill in our students an open mind about the WORLD as their home!
