TED Talks are influential videos from expert speakers on education, business, science, tech and creativity. Shorecrest sixth graders recently wrote speeches in the style of TED Talks about human rights, social justice and civil rights issues. Their goal was to teach their classmates and raise awareness about an issue. They chose their own topics and used persuasive strategies studied earlier in the year (ethos, pathos, logos).
In preparation the Chargers completed research and an annotated bibliography, wrote an outline, analyzed speeches by activists, viewed a student talk on access to water in Eritrea and then wrote a speech. Many students recorded a video of themselves presenting their TED Talk; while a few asked to deliver their speech live to the class instead of playing a recording.
