JK Students Pilot Eighth Grade ROVs
For the past few years, eighth graders have taken part in an innovative ROV project. The ROV/ROT Project has two main parts. First students ideate and prototype a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) or Remote Operated Technology (ROT) that would solve a real world problem. Next students build actual ROVs with motors and controllers that perform underwater challenges.
After the Chargers had completed the design and build phase of their functioning, underwater ROVs this year, they had some special guests. Students from Junior Kindergarten visited the Middle School Center for Arts and Sciences and viewed the PVC structures the eighth graders had built with working motors and controllers. The JK students watched the "big kids" run their ROVs through timed, underwater trials, with the aim of completing specific tasks such as picking up or moving items left underwater to simulate ocean exploration and research. Next, the JK students' piloting skills were put to the test when they got to control the ROVs themselves!
Thank you to the eighth graders who patiently explained their projects and shared their hard work.
